Insta-Famous Headwear Brand, Ruslan Baginskiy Is Loved By The Model Crowd
Ruslan Baginskiy is a headwear brand loved by the modern day it girls, influencers and models, I present Irene Kim, Izabel Goulart, Vera Brezhneva, Bella Hadid, Kaia Gerber, and Victoria Secret’s very own Romee Strijd and Elsa Hosk. Let’s not forget the A-listers too, Madonna is a huge fan. And it is easy to see why, this headwear is so wearable, so chic and has proved to be so Instagramable too. A magical combination.
What was your first fashionable memory? I always admired fashion. But I clearly remember that moment when I saw the Christian Dior Spring 2004 Couture show. It was John Galliano’s collection inspired by an ancient Egypt. The show was amazing, it just took my breath away and I really wanted to become a part of this world and create something like this in one day.
What lured you into the industry? I started my way into fashion industry as a stylist and have been working in the sphere for 3 years. During that time I’ve worked with the professionals of different levels. And ended up styling the shows of Ukrainian designers. I couldn’t find the proper accessories that would perfectly fit the aesthetics of the shows. That’s when I started creating accessories on my own. After few seasons, I realised that the hole process of designing and making hats and other accessories fascinates and inspires me so much, that I left my work as a stylist and started my own brand.
Why headwear? People often ask me about that, and to be honest I can’t name one particular reason. It just came out naturally. Parents always loved hats and my grandmother even gave me 200$ as a start-up capital for launching the production.
But it turned out to be not so easy. Firstly, I had to learn a lot about making hats, because the quality is very important. But I couldn’t find where I could study it all in my hometown – Lviv. So I had to learn a lot on my own from deferent hat masters that I’ve met along the way. In few months I knew probably all masters in my hometown. I love my work, though it is challenging sometimes, but I’m still learning a lot.
How would you sum up the brand aesthetic? The aesthetics of the Ruslan Baginskiy brand is a combination of traditions and modernity, of a culture of wearing hats and fashion trends. I recently revised my family album and saw a photo of my mother, around 90s, she was wearing an autumn coat and a cap, my grandfather also loved hats.
Apparently, at the subconscious level, I inherited this love for hats and
embodied it in the brand. Of course, our styles look modern and fashionable, but traditions are a huge and important part of our aesthetics.
Who is your customer? I do not like all these abstract descriptions of a “hero” of the brand, because I see our customers every day. They tag the brand on Instagram, i meet them at the Saint Honoré, we dine at the same restaurants and go to the same parties in Paris and Kiev. There is a variety of them – adults and young people, classy and fashionistas, celebrities, even friends of my mother, but they all value hats. They can fit everyone, you just need to find your perfect match.
How has social media had an impact on your brand? Social networks have changed a lot in the industry. They gave a chance to reach people you dream to work with, while your are physically in Ukraine. Now the industry is working under the new rules and the main thing is not to be afraid to make brave and creative solutions. In fact, our brand has become successful due to our activity in social networks. Now we can see a lot of brands that are already using Instagram as the main platform to promote their brand.
Obviously, now PR and social networks are the two most important things in the modern world, and a brand without Instagram has less chance to succeed.
What are the greatest lessons learned when it comes to the industry? Now everything happens very quickly and its very important to react quickly to events and challenges that you face. Now I know for sure that relations are very important in the fashion industry. And you can make good and friendly relations with different people from the industry even living in a country in Eastern Europe. Nowadays without PR and social networks, the brand remains in the last century. And most importantly – do not be afraid to set yourself great goals. In the modern world everything is possible.
And always surround yourself with loyal people and partners, that have as much faith in your success, as you do.
